So this is a picture of the drainage ditch alongside every road. It's hard to see cuz I was in the car, but it's about 1.5 feet deep, sometimes up to 2 feet deep. I guess there used to be iron grates covering these gutters, but they were stolen so many times for scrap metal that the gov't decided to just forget about it. Anyway, very dangerous. Last time we were leaving the Embassy, we saw a man trying to pull an obviously INTOXICATED bleach blond woman out of one of these gutters. She didn't appear to be hurt, but so intoxicated that the man was having a really, really hard time getting her out of the gutter. No, we didn't stop....but rather giggled all the way home. M said that it happens quite often. He just kept trying to heave her out and everytime she'd fall back in. No, she wasn't particularly robust...just that drunk.
Ah, the things that make me laugh, and also realize that it very easily could be me! LOL.
I guess "in the gutter" has a literal meaning in Uzbekistan.
