Here is the outside of the city of Khiva.
This is a map of the ancient city itself. It's pretty big.
These hats were used to keep warm and to also shield the eyes from the sun. They are made from sheep wool.
An example of the use of tiles on the exterior of the buildings. These pre-date the 19th century!
D really wants this fox coat, but it's a little too short for her. It's really pretty and soft though, and only $100 USD.
Many of the doors are carved. It's really intricate work.
This was where many of the Khan's prayed.
They carved openings in the walls for dishes.
One of the Khan's thrones.
Here's a view of the ancient city from the watch tower. It's pretty big.
D just loves to take my picture. :(
More views.
This is the jail. Very small and unsanitary.
Beautiful pieces of ornate jewelry in the museum. The wives and concubines would wear their jewelry all day and night because if the Khan suddenly decided to get rid of them, all they could take with them is what they were wearing. This is why they wore so much jewelry all the time.
A real camel. I stayed far away, I didn't want to get spit on.
These women are making bread outdoors in a turien (sp?)
They use stamps to make the bread pretty. I bought some for my dad.
I took this for my mother. She is weaving on a very large loom. She's been working on this piece for 3 months.
This is an even larger loom used for carpets. They can take over a year to make. Ouch.
The watchtower...I didn't go up the 150 steps.
More pics of me and D's nephew.
Note the thickness of the walls. It's amazone.
Here's all the loot I got, wool socks, pillow covers, pashminas, camel hair shawls, jewelry, etc.
